Minneapolis – October 19, 2011 – MakeMusic, Inc. (NASDAQ: MMUS) has announced the 2012 Finale National Composition Contest, a partnership with the American Composers Forum and the American string quartet JACK Quartet. The competition is focused on instrumental chamber music and designed for student composers who are currently enrolled in graduate and undergraduate institutions in the United States.

“We are delighted to partner with the American Composers Forum and JACK Quartet,” said Karen van Lith, MakeMusic president and CEO. “The goal of inspiring student composers aligns very closely with MakeMusic’s mission.”

The competition challenges students to submit a piece they have written within the past three years that represents their best work. Three finalists will be chosen from the total applicant pool to receive a cash prize and the opportunity to write an 8- to 10-minute string quartet for JACK Quartet. In early September 2012, finalists will travel to New York to meet with JACK Quartet for rehearsal and public reading sessions prior to hearing their piece performed by the ensemble. One composition will be chosen to receive the final prize, which includes an additional cash award and future public performances by JACK Quartet.

“The Forum is thrilled with the opportunity to connect student composers with the phenomenal JACK Quartet,” said John Nuechterlein, Forum president and CEO. “They are brilliant performers with a laser-like focus on new work, and the chance to connect them with young talent is very exciting. We are grateful to MakeMusic for their generous support of the competition.”

Complete guidelines, schedules and application information can be found at the contest website.
