A composer of many different styles of modern classical music for many different combinations of instruments and voices.
David Arbury (b. 1973)Dr. David Arbury grew up in Washington, D. C. where he sang as a boy treble at Washington National Cathedral in the Cathedral Choir of Men and Boys. He remained with the choir for eighteen years and in that time sang with every voice part. He has worked at the Music Division of the Library of Congress, co-founded an independent record label, conducted small ensembles, performed extensively as a bass and percussion player, and is a founding member for the early music vocal ensemble Icarus. He has acted as a composer-in-residence and has received commissions and grants from numerous ensembles and organizations including the American Composers Forum, the Arizona Commission on the Arts, the Phoenix Arts Commission, and the Wolf Trap Foundation. His compositions for concert hall, church, dance, and theater have been performed throughout the United States, as well as in Denmark, England, France, Ireland, and Italy.
I am interested in many, many styles of music and my compositions reflect that diverse influence. I believe in approaching each piece on its own terms. While this can result in some disparate pieces - an avant garde percussion piece on the one hand, a traditional, tonal choral piece on the other - they are nevertheless linked by my own experience and musical vocabulary. Exploring and refining the common thread in my music will probably be my life's work, but the search may be more important than the answer.
