Biography

Composer Mary Ellen Childs has been acclaimed for creating both rhythmic, exuberant instrumental works and bold, kinetic compositions that integrate music, dance and theater in fresh and unexpected ways. Childs is well known for her “visual percussion” pieces for her percussion group CRASH, in which she incorporates the movements of the bodies of the performers. She has received numerous commissions, including the Kronos Quartet, the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, Opera America, the Dale Warland Singers, The Kitchen, Chamber Music America, the Walker Art Center, several commissioning grants from Meet The Composer commissioning program, and three commissions from the MAP Fund. Childs has received numerous awards and fellowships, including a 2011 United States Artist Friends Fellowship, and fellowships from the Bush Foundation, The McKnight Foundation and the Minnesota State Arts Board. Her work has been presented at the Bang On A Can Festival, Lincoln Center, New Music America -Miami; The Other Minds Festival (San Francisco), and elsewhere around the U.S. as well as Europe, Eastern Europe, Japan, Australia, and Russia.
