The Portfolio Review is a rare opportunity to get valuable critical feedback and guidance on your compositions and other professional documents. Your scores, C.V., and statements are the primary way to show graduate schools, employers, or grant organizations who you are, what you do, and why it matters. As the composer, it can be difficult to step back and critique your work in the way an outside professional would. In this workshop we will explore what makes your musical voice distinct and exciting, and how to communicate that voice most effectively in your creative work and documents.
Each session of Portfolio Review is limited to 3 composers. Registration is first-come first-served.
The enrollment form asks for basic info (name, email), a question about their musical training (just so we can get a sense of backgrounds of the people we are reaching and enrolling) and an open-format question asking about their interest in the workshop.
CONTENT:
Participants will gain individual feedback of their compositional work and professional documents (CV, cover letter, etc), and participate in discussion of the other participants’ materials to build a better understanding of how to present one’s musical ideas most effectively in music, and how to effectively communicate your work through other documents.
REQUIREMENTS:
Participants will submit 3 to 5 compositions, and may also provide artist statements, CVs, Cover Letters, etc, to the instructor. Materials are to be submitted at least one week prior to the workshop.
ATTENDANCE:
Participants choose between available sections when registering. Each session will meet online, unless coordinated with the instructor (for Los Angeles-based participants). Please note that all times are listed in Pacific Time.
*Additional times/sections may be added for Impulse Workshops, depending on demand and faculty availability.
PAYMENT:
No payment is due at the time of registration. Once your spot is confirmed in a workshop, you will receive instructions on payment options. Payment plans may be available for confirmed participants.
INSTRUCTOR:
The faculty mentor of this workshop is Dr. Brandon J. Rolle.
Artistic Director of the Impulse New Music Festival, Dr. Rolle is a composer and conductor with extensive experience researching, teaching, and composing music. Rolle has worked with some of the most important figures in contemporary music, including Pauline Oliveros, Clarence Barlow, and Curtis Roads, and his innovative work draws on psychoacoustics research, electronic music techniques, and computer programming to realize deeply-immersive sound worlds. Rolle lives in Los Angeles where he works as a composer and teaches at the Colburn Conservatory of Music and Chapman University. He holds graduate degrees in music composition from Mills College (MA) and University of California, Santa Barbara (PhD).
