Ranging from 10-week long programs to single-day events, each workshop focuses on an essential topic in contemporary music making: From fundamentals of craft, to advanced techniques, to professional development, you’ll leave every Impulse Workshop with new ideas, tools, and materials to put you a step ahead.

Take your craft to the next level with an in-depth analysis of how theory, orchestration, form, and advanced techniques combine to create masterwork compositions that continue to be studied hundreds of years after their creation. A small number of composers are chosen to participate in this intensive, hands-on workshop, which includes original materials and exercises developed by the Impulse New Music Festival. Artistic Director, Dr. Brandon J. Rolle, mentors participants through study, exercises, and discussion towards a commanding control of technique and craft.

Participants have the opportunity to have their compositional work reviewed, if desired. For questions about the workshop, contact the instructor.

The Composition Masterclasses is a rare opportunity to get valuable critical feedback and guidance on your compositions. Your scores are the primary way to show schools, employers, or grant organizations who you are, what you do, and why it matters, but it is difficult as the composer to step back and hear/critique your work as another listener would. Reviewing work in small groups provides specific, personalized feedback in addition to building a deeper understanding of how to translate musical ideas into musical works. In this workshop we will explore what makes your musical voice distinct and exciting, and how to communicate that voice most effectively in your creative work.

Each session of Composition Masterclass is limited to 3 composers.
