2020 Call for Submissions!
DEADLINE: Monday June 1, 2020, 11:59pm Eastern Time
Music At The Anthology (MATA) seeks submissions from composers who have not yet graduated high school at the time of submission. We accept all music: sound art, video, electronic, found instruments, toys, installations, fully notated, improvised, and everything in between. A distinguished panel of MATA’s directors, composers, and performers will select six composers to participate in MATA Jr. 2020.
Each selected composer will be paired with one of MATA’s alumni composer-mentors and asked to write a new work — which must be completed during the summer of 2020 — for the Bergamot String Quartet. Works will be rehearsed and performed in concert in New York City during MATA’s 2020-2021 season. Composers must plan to attend the performance; MATA is able to provide limited, need-based transportation assistance on a case-by-case basis.
Composers who have applied previously but were not accepted are welcome to apply again. Composers whose works have been performed previously must wait one year before applying again.
The application is in two parts: (a) the online application form, (access here) and (b) an email containing your two (2) best scores and recordings sent to MATAJr@matafestival.org with the subject “MATA Jr. 2020 – [Your Name]”. All materials must be submitted by 11:59pm Eastern Time on Monday, June 1. There is no entrance fee.
Scores: All scores must be in PDF format. We cannot open Finale, Sibelius or other notation files. Please name your file with your last name and the title of the work. (Example: Mozart_EineKleineNachtmusik.pdf). If scores are not pertinent to your work, please provide a pdf explaining how the sound is created / produced.
Audio: mp3 format. We strongly encourage you to submit an audio realization of your work. MIDI is acceptable. Please name your file with your last name and the title of the work. (Example: Mozart_EineKleineNachtmusik.mp3)
If you have any questions about the submission process, please do not hesitate to email us at email@example.com. While we strongly encourage digital submission, we can accept postal submission: please email us.
Results will be announced in June 2020, with final scores and parts due in Fall 2020.
About MATA Jr.
Founded in 2014 as the educational arm of MATA, MATA Jr. pairs pre-college composers selected from a free, global call for submissions with MATA Festival alumni composers in a mentorship program to create new works for a performance in New York City. While there are many programs that aim to assist young composers, MATA Jr. is unique in that all parties benefit from a collaborative learning process in which participants are both teacher and student.
Each winter, MATA holds an open call for submissions from pre-college composers to select several to receive mentorship and an eventual performance by a professional ensemble. A jury consisting of MATA’s composer-mentors and staff meet to assess submissions. Selected composers are paired with one of two composer-mentors, who guide them through the development of a new composition from idea to score to rehearsal to performance.
