About Gabriela Ortiz Composing Studio

The Gabriela Ortiz Composing Studio by OAcademy is a six-month lab in partnership with Harvard University DRCLAS. Open to 12 innovative composers earlier in the career development, participants will train with and receive mentorship from a range of leading music creators across the field, all under the guidance of celebrated Mexican composer Gabriela Ortiz.

Through its curriculum of dynamic coursework and supportive resources, fellows graduate with the professional recordings, supercharged portfolio, and enhanced network needed to take the next step in a successful global composing career.

OAcademy Artist Diploma

Tailored to the busy lives of rising musicians on-the-go, the OAcademy Artist Diploma is a fast-track professional certificate that prepares rising composers for the complex demands of an evolving performance industry.

The Gabriela Ortiz Composing Fellowship unfolds across 24 weeks, with group coursework from January to June 2024.

Fellows graduate with a high-quality recording of a new work for professional musicians, a portfolio of self-marketing materials, an international network of composers and change-making artists, and the resources to take the next step in their composition journey.

Each accepted fellow engages in:

  • Masterclasses with world-renowned composers
  • Series of interdisciplinary sessions covering auxiliary topics like film scoring, working with dancers, etc.
  • Industry sessions on topics like publishing and copyright, writing artist statements, applying for faculty jobs, and more!
  • Personal exposure to world-class composers and creatives through dedicated networking events with guests
  • Lecture-discussions with leading agency representatives and artistic planning heads
  • Access to observe OAcademy masterclass suite with world-class Faculty, including Sarah Willis, Gil Shaham, and Alisa Weilerstein
  • Interactive participation and certificate from OAcademy’s Reflective Leadership module curated by Harvard University’s DRCLAS faculty
  • Close collaboration with professional artists to compose new work
  • An immersive in-person residency in Maryland with the mentorship and guidance from Gabriela Ortiz
    • Transportation and a grocery stipend will be provided to all Fellows who attend the residency
    • Fellows are responsible for their own airfare to BWI Airport (Baltimore/Washington International Airport)
    • OAcademy can issue letters to help process visas for international applicants, when needed
    • Although Fellows are encouraged to attend the residency, it is not required

Costs

APPLICATION COST

There is no cost to apply to the OAcademy Artist Diploma.

PARTICIPATION COST

A $2,750 enrollment fee is required from all accepted Fellows to take part in the 6-month OAcademy Artist Diploma. The full cost of administering the 2024 OAcademy Artist Diploma is $12,750 USD per participant. A network of OAcademy partners and sponsors subsidizes the program, allowing all accepted OAcademy fellows to automatically be awarded a $10,000 USD fellowship bursary that reduces participation costs to $2,750 USD per person. No other financial aid or scholarships are available.
