SCI 2021 National Student Conference: Call for Works, Papers, and Workshops

The Society of Composers, Inc. (SCI) Student Council is excited to announce a call for scores and applications for the society’s 2021 National Student Conference. The conference will feature pre-existing electronic works, along with both pre-existing and newly commissioned works performed by Kamratōn. The Conference will be virtual and sessions will be held each weekend in the month of August. Composers may only submit one application. See guidelines and application instructions below.

Call for Works

To submit a pre-existing work, please include:

  • Brief Bio
  • Score and recording for one work that meets the following requirements:
    • Works for Kamratōn: Flute (all flutes), Clarinet (Eb, Bb, A, and Bass with low C), Violin, Cello, Soprano (or any subset of this ensemble including solos)
    • Electronic Works: Fixed Media, Multimedia, and Live Electronics. Electroacoustic works that do not involve live electronics will be accepted at this time (i.e. electroacoustic works with fixed media electronics only).
    • Works should be no longer than 10 minutes
    • Ensemble works must be able to be performed without a conductor

To submit a proposal for a newly commission work for Kamratōn, please include:

  • Brief Bio
  • Two composition work samples representative of your unique voice as a composer. These works can be for any instrumentation. Composers are encouraged to submit works that demonstrate experience with writing for flute, clarinet, violin, cello, and/or soprano.
    • Selected composers will be assigned an instrumentation upon acceptance.
    • Midi recordings are acceptable.

There is no age limit, but composers must be students (high school, undergraduate, or graduate). Accepted composers must be members of SCI. Membership can be obtained upon acceptance. Membership is $15/year for students, with free complimentary membership for composers who identify as BIPOC. Please submit all application materials via the Google Form below by May 10th. If you have any questions, please email studentchapters@societyofcomposers.org with the subject “2021 National Student Conference Question.”

Call for Papers and Workshops

The Society of Composers, Inc. (SCI) Student Council is excited to announce a call for paper and workshop proposals for the society’s 2021 National Student Conference. The conference will feature student paper talks and workshops, along with performances of student works and a keynote address. The Conference will be virtual with sessions held each weekend in the month of August. Composers may only submit one paper/workshop proposal. Paper talks and workshops should be no longer than 20 minutes long. To apply, please submit an application, along with a 250 word abstract/proposal at the link below.
