True Concord Voices & Orchestra announces its fourth STEPHEN PAULUS EMERGING COMPOSERS COMPETITION in honor of our friend, Stephen Paulus, who was committed to fostering the talent of young composers.

Stephen Paulus (1949-2014) was a prolific American composer of classical music. He wrote over 600 works for chorus, opera, orchestra, chamber ensemble, solo voice, concert band, piano, and organ, receiving premieres and performances throughout the world as well as a Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary Classical Composition in 2015 and 2016, which he won in 2016 for Prayers and Remembrances, commissioned by True Concord for the 10th anniversary of 9/11.

ELIGIBILITY: American composers age 18-40 (age as of January 31, 2021)

DEADLINE: December 1, 2020

PRIZE:

  • $1,500
  • performance by True Concord in three January 2021 concerts in Tucson (unless rescheduling necessary due to pandemic)
  • $500 travel stipend to attend the concerts.

DETAILS: A part of True Concord’s 2020-21 season, HER: Celebrating the Impact of Women on the World, January’s “The Trailblazers” concert commemorates the centenary of women’s suffrage in the U.S. The winning piece will be given its world premiere in this three-performance project. Submit a pdf and midi realization of a 5-6 minute setting of one of four selected poems by prominent women whose writings are consequential to the Suffrage Movement, found at trueconcord.org/composerscompetition.
