Symposium “The microtonal Village” 2024

A series of Papers, Workshops and Concerts focusing on Lou Harrison’s microtonal music and the American Primitive to be presented in New York City in collaboration with The Village Trip Festival.

Marsyas Productions and the Roger Shapiro Fund are pleased to announce a Call for Papers for the Symposium “The microtonal Village” 2024 in New York City between the 20th and the 22nd of September 2024 as a part of The Village Trip Festival. Applicants may be of any age or nationality.

With focus on Lou Harrison’s music and the American Primitive, we invite submission of abstracts of up to 300 words and a short CV. Papers may address the music of any period, concerning microtonal issues such as tuning systems, microtonality and scale systems, new compositions, etc. Demonstrations and lecture recitals are very welcome. Papers to be presented should be 45 minutes in length (35 min. presentation and 10 min. discussion).

Papers should be presented in person. Online papers might also be possible (to be decided by the commission in May). The participants are responsible for their own travel, including visa requirements. There is no support or grants to the participants, but the symposium can provide invitation letters to support their own applications for funding.

There are no congress fees. Active participants are entitled to attend any presentations at the symposium. Information about the venues where the lectures will take place and about attendance will be announced in May.

Lecturers will have the possibility to publish their presentations on the book “The microtonal Village” at Mackingerverlag in Austria.
