Composer Dream Projects is a new initiative from Synchromy Music, designed to give composers/music-makers a chance to “reverse” the classical commissioning model. Synchromy Music will partner with you to secure funding for the selected project through grants and other fundraising endeavors, in the hopes of procuring the best commissioning fee possible within our production constraints. If selected, a separate commissioning agreement with a full list of terms will be executed when appropriate.
We believe that many of the best ideas and most important works were not created given a strict set of parameters/instrumentation with a prescribed theme, but originate from creators themselves, who are too often tasked with creating either with little to no external support, or having to painstakingly scrape it together. We also believe that the classical music landscape is not an equitable one, and does not have sufficient infrastructure for supporting “unconventional” work, and even less so for composers/music-makers from “unconventional” or under-represented backgrounds.
As this initiative continues to take shape, our hope is to create a formal opportunity for composers/music-makers based in Southern California to have their “dream projects” commissioned and brought to life, and take a step towards more equitable funding of contemporary music that allows for creators in our field to have more control over what they get to make.
