The purpose of The Vibraphone Project Inc. (VPI) is to promote, support, educate, and nurture artists associated with the vibraphone (including, but not limited to, performers, composers, manufacturers, researchers, teachers, and students) throughout the world, and to increase global appreciation for the vibraphone and its artists by expanding, educating, and inspiring audiences worldwide.

The New Works Committee here at VPI is excited to solicit new works featuring the vibraphone. The goal of this endeavor will be to create and foster a community of composers and performers who are enthusiastic about the vibraphone. This is our second Call for Scores (CFS) since our organization’s inception in 2020. For more information about our previous call, CLICK HERE

Guidelines:

The Vibraphone Project is proud to open its call for scores to composers of any age, nationality or genre (jazz, classical, contemporary, experimental, w/ electronics, etc.), as long as the vibraphone is the primary feature of your submission. Works can be in solo or ensemble contexts and open in duration, but please note that the panelists and reviewers may have limited time to thoroughly look over lengthy works or works for large ensembles. We encourage you to use your compositional voice and style with the vibraphone as your vehicle!

Entries:

  • Must be completed within the last 12 months from Sept. 1, 2024
  • May be previously performed, recorded, published, awarded, etc.
  • May be handwritten manuscripts (or graphic scores) or done via music notation software, but must be neat and legible.
  • May include audio files (optional, but strongly encouraged), and must be in mp3 format.
  • Must include program notes directly after the title page that briefly describe the work.

There is NO fee to submit your work, but we kindly suggest a donation of $10 to help support our organization. This will have no effect on your submission’s evaluation. Please CLICK HERE to donate.

Submission & Evaluation Process:

  • Composers will submit a hyperlink to their own cloud storage folder (e.g., Dropbox/ Google Drive) that contains their submission materials:
  • One pdf file with your name visible in the document itself as well as the file title of the work. (e.g., Doe.John.Title).
  • A second pdf file will only have program notes and the score itself, in order to facilitate a double-blind reviewing process by the panelists. Do NOT put your name anywhere within the document itself or the file title (e.g. Title.pdf).
  • Audio / audio samples in mp3 format are optional, but strongly encouraged.
  • Submit your materials by CLICKING HERE
  • The submissions will be reviewed via a DOUBLE-BLIND process. The evaluators will only have access to the PDF of your piece that does NOT have any identifiable information on it.

Submissions are due no later than October 15th, 2024.
Announcements on the evaluation results will be made on/before November 13th, 2024.

Evaluation Results:

  • Online Amplification – Submissions that qualify at this level will be included in VPI’s Repertoire Database, which will contain audio/video and score samples of your submission. With your consent, we will also include links to your or your publisher’s website, as well as contact information (email / social media) so that performers interested in your work can contact you! As we have stated, the overarching goal of our organization is to create a network and community of vibraphone enthusiasts.
  • Print and Bound – Pending the number of entries, submissions earning this level of recognition will receive a spot in a compendium / collection of works disseminated by VPI. The collection(s) of select compositions will be considered exceptional and of the highest quality. This is a non-exclusive licensing agreement and not a claim of copyright ownership; composers will retain full copyright control and are encouraged to publish their works however they wish. Opting out of inclusion in the compendium(s) will not affect any submission’s adjudication or consideration.
  • VPI Showcase – A small number of submissions that earn this level of recognition will receive online amplification of their work, be eligible for inclusion in the 2024 Compendium(s), AND will receive a featured performance at one of The Vibraphone Project’s future events, be they online or in-person. Archival recordings of these performances will be provided to the composers.
    • The performance will take place in May 2025 at the Vibraphone Project Showcase at the Center for Mallet Percussion Research at Kutztown University in Kutztown, PA. Selected composers are not required to attend.
