Voices Up! An annual series of vocal concerts at Fordham University’s Lincoln Center Campus in New York, invites submissions for a concert to be given on April 11, 2024. All composers, without restriction of any kind, are welcome to submit applications for an invitation to compose a 6-8 minute work for soprano voice with string trio or any combination of the voice with violin, viola, and/or cello.  Works may include several movements.  There is no entry fee.

Two selected composers will be invited to adapt text drawn from one of four volumes published since 2020 in the Poets Out Loud Prize series published by Fordham University Press.  For a sample, from the books by  by Jennifer Atkinson, Alison Powell, Sarah Mangold, and S. Brook Corfman, copy the following link and paste it in your address bar: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1SnmOY80w-tAeK2jENtqeAdagroqkU210/view?usp=sharing

Founded in 2009, Voices Up! focuses on new or recently composed music. Our vocal concerts generally feature newly composed settings of newly written poetry, most often in collaboration with Fordham University Press. We are committed both to expanding the parameters of the art song and to the core principles of diversity and inclusion.

Composers should submit the score and a recording (midi is acceptable) of a work of any length that demonstrates their ability to write for voice and solo strings.  Please include a short bio (ca. 250 words or less), a program note (for the work sample submitted), and an indication of whether you expect to attend the concert (not a requirement, but we like when possible to have composers say a few words to the audience). Entries should be emailed to [email protected] by November 1, 2023.  Invitations to as many as two composers will be made in early December. In addition to the performance and a recording, the composer(s) whose work is selected will receive a modest honorarium. Travel funding is not available.
