Call for Scores!

Warsaw Wind Ensemble Composition Contest 2020 is the first edition of the international competition for composers.

The subject of the Contest is to create a premiere composition for a wind orchestra.

The Final Gala of the Contest will be held on November 28, 2020 in Warsaw, Poland.

The Contest is organized by the Warsaw Wind Music Association and the PWM Edition.

There are two categories: eligible for international and polish composers.

contest rules

Category 1

International

  • for composers from all over the world (also with Polish citizenship)
  • duration of the composition: 5 to 10 minutes
  • any subject matter
  • participation fee: 30 € (32 USD)
  • Prize:
    • Publication of the composition in the series ‘Biblioteka Orkiestr Dętych’ (The Wind Orchestras Library) of the PWM Edition
    • Cash prize – 100 € (109 USD)
    • Performance of the composition at the Final Gala
    • Diploma, statuette, CDs and publications by PWM Edition

category 2

Domestic – Polish

  • only for composers with Polish citizenship
  • duration of the composition: 3 to 5 minutes
  • any subject matter
  • participation fee: 100 PLN
  • Prize:
    • Cash prize – 4000 PLN
    • Publication of the composition in the series ‘Biblioteka Orkiestr Dętych’ (The Wind Orchestras Library) of the PWM Edition
    • Performance of the composition at the Final Gala
    • Diploma, statuette, CDs and publications by PWM Edition

  • 3 clarinets in B

  • 2 alt saxophones
  • 1 tenor saxophone
  • 1 baritone saxophone
  • 3 horns in F
  • 4 trumpets in B
  • 3 trombones
  • 2 tenor horns
  • 2 baritone horns or euphoniums
  • 1 tuba
  • 1 bass guitar
  • percussion section (3 percussionists):
    • timpani
    • glockenspiel
    • drums (crash, hi-hat, ride, toms, snare drum, bass drum)
    • piatti a due
    • percussion instruments:
      • (triangle, tambourine, cowbell, guiro, temple blocks, maracasas, shakers, cabasa, sleigh bells, congas)

***Composer is not obliged to use all the given instruments in the composition.

Only original, previously unpublished, non-publicly performed and unrewarded compositions can be applied for the Contest.

The Final Gala of the Contest will take place on November 28, 2020 at the Ursynów District Cultural Centre in Warsaw.

During the Gala Concert:

  • Awards ceremony for the winners of the Contest
  • Premiere of works composed by the Contest Laureates (winners of the first three places in both competition categories)
The winning compositions during the Concert will be performed by the Warsaw University of Life Sciences Representative Orchestra conducted by Chris David Westover (USA, winner of the Warsaw Wind Ensemble Conducting Competition 2019)
AND
Concert Wind Orchestra of the Representative Artistic Ensemble of the Polish Armed Forces conducted by Marcin Ślązak

The day of the Concert will also include lectures by composers and music theorists on specialized literature for wind orchestra.

All events will be open to the public and will be available online via transmission on the Contest website and in social media.

Compositions can be submitted through the registration system: https://rejestracja.warsawwinds.pl/

Appropriate participation fee must be paid prior to application.

A correct application should contain:

  • Score of the submitted composition:
    – File format: PDF,
    – Score should be marked with an alphanumeric sign (instead of the composer’s name),
    – The following information should be included on the score: alphanumeric emblem, title of the composition, duration, exact orchestra cast, possible additional performance notes.
  • Bank confirmation of the registration fee transfer;
  • An interactive registration form containing the following information:
    – alphanumeric emblem of the composition,
    – composition title,
    – composer’s name,
    – date and place of birth of the composer,
    – nationality of the composer,
    – email address and contact phone.
  • A recording of a composition as an MP3 sound file (computer simulation okay).
  • A participant may submit more than one composition in each category. Each composition must be submitted separately and participation fee must be paid for each composition.
  • Confirmation of qualification to the Contest will be sent to participant by e-mail.
