Bringing Composers & Communities Together

From 1992-2018 Faith Partners inspired communities across the country, invigorated sacred music, and introduced more than 50 composers into congregations large and small, urban and rural. Composers-in-residence created new works reflecting the diverse religions and regions they served, and congregations collaborated to commission ecumenical works that they could share. The final two residencies concluded in June 2018, and we invite you to celebrate with us the legacy of this groundbreaking program — by reading a growing list of quotes from participating composers, and perusing the impressive catalog of music created over the past 26 years. Most of this music is available to the public. Just click the button below to download a sortable spreadsheet of over 200 accessible, liturgical works. *We updated the catalog in October, 2018, so click refresh on your browser if you don’t see the latest version!

Residency Reflections

A. Eric Heukeshoven — As a composer, I was given the extraordinary opportunity to create six distinct new works. While challenging, this spurred my creativity in ways that I never could have imagined!

Wynn-Anne Rossi — The ACF Faith Partners experience taught me that a community can compose. Though I was the one putting the notes to paper, the brainstorming process was a truly democratic experience.  At the premiere, everyone felt ownership of the music!

Kurt Erickson — Fresh out of grad school at The University of Notre Dame, I moved back to the San Francisco Bay Area for some additional post-graduate work in music composition at Mills College. Thanks to ACF funding, I served as Composer-in-Residence with four Bay Area sacred music institutions between 1999-2003. These residencies (and the support I received from the ACF) gave me the confidence I needed early on to build and sustain a career in the arts (no small thing!). Before I knew it, I was involved in multiple commissions from the likes of the Grammy Award winning San Francisco Girls Chorus, receiving commissions to write evening length choral ballets for the Ballet Master of the San Francisco Opera, and commissions from four-year colleges and universities to commemorate special events in their institutional history. As composers we live and work in a largely solitary environment that doesn’t offer us a lot of support, financial or otherwise. When organizations like the American Composers Forum step up and provide what are essentially high level interning positions for composers to learn their craft, this is valuable experience that just can’t be replicated in any classroom.

Craig Carnahan — The program gave me such valuable experience working with conductors and performers, and being able to build relationships over a sustained period.

Sergey Khvoshchinsky — I did not have much experience in the field of religious music (when I began my Faith Partners Residency). After the concert (of new works) many people came to me and said it was the best concert ever in Detroit Lakes. All the churches participated in this event, and they hired musicians from Sioux Falls. Even in a snowstorm the church was full!

Tom Hale — I look back on my Faith Partners experience with fondness and gratitude

Gerald Cohen — My own residency in New York City in 2002-2003 was an amazing experience for me—I had the opportunity to compose for three superb choirs and conductors in NYC, and to learn from them more deeply about the kinds of texts and music that would be valuable and effective in ecumenical settings.

What’s Next?

As Faith Partners comes to a close, a new community residency program has been created to serve the Upper Midwest, with continued support from Otto Bremer Trust. ACF is thrilled to announce the launch of In Common with the community of Willmar, MN. Despite religious and cultural differences, longtime Willmar residents and new immigrants from around the world are finding opportunities to build together a better future for all. This collaboration aims to share some of those stories and celebrate this thriving, evolving community. Over the coming year, people from all walks of life will participate in a community-wide songwriting project, led by the selected composer-in-residence. Please visit the webpage to learn more: https://composersforum.org/programs/in-common/.
