For Bang on a Can’s 2023 LONG PLAY FESTIVAL (May 5 – 7), Quince Ensemble will perform love fail, by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer David Lang. Quince Ensemble, an all-female contemporary music vocal quartet, recorded the piece for innova Recordings, the American Composers Forum’s in-house label. Released to great acclaim in 2020, love fail consists of 15 movements for the four voices and sporadic instruments. It feels more like an elegant contemplation of a timeless subject: the story of Tristan und Isolde, which Lang calls “the greatest love story ever” in his notes.

The piece is an introspective meditation on love and loss, and a juxtaposition of the ancient and the modern, setting rewritings of different medieval versions of the Tristan myth to music, next to tart microfiction by Lydia Davis.

The performance will take place on Saturday, May 6, at 7:30 p.m., at the BRIC Ballroom (647 Fulton Street, Brooklyn, NY 11217).
