Natalie Brown
Natalie Brown is a composer, playwright, and performer who works across theatre, contemporary songwriting, and classical music. For her Recomposing America project, ACF has commissioned a new one-act blues opera titled 90 Miles from Anywhere.
About the Commission
90 Miles From Anywhere tells the story of Black migrant farmworkers on Long Island during the winter of 1965–66. Set in a migrant labor camp, the opera explores a fragile and uneasy community shaped by necessity, loyalty, and the compromises required to endure. The opera draws on Steve Wicks’ Pulitzer Prize-winning book “All That Remains” and takes this story back to the land, its original stewards, and the migrant communities whose stories are still embedded in that earth. Blending the emotional depth of opera with the intimacy of contemporary musical theatre, the work explores movement, memory, family, and the choices that separate surviving from truly living.
