Gabriela Lena Frank Lecture: Forging a Composer’s Path in 2021 and Beyond
April 30, 2021 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm CDT
The arrival of COVID-19 in 2020 was devastating to the performing arts. An urgent call rang loud and clear to artists from all walks of life: adapt and create new models or risk losing livelihoods that took years to build.
Gabriela Lena Frank, a composer born with high-moderate/near-profound hearing loss, describes her creative experience and process. Her music often reflects not only her own personal experience as a multi-racial Latina, but also refract her studies of Latin American cultures, incorporating poetry, mythology, and native musical styles into a western classical framework that is uniquely her own.
Lecture followed by Q&A moderated by Professor Mark Russell Smith, Director of Orchestral Studies, University of Minnesota.
Date & Time: Friday, April 30, 2021 at 4pm CT
