We are thrilled to announce our newest addition to BandQuest®, our music series for middle-level band: Steps Ahead by Michael Gandolfi.

“Steps Ahead is a delightful piece with something interesting for every instrument in the ensemble. Each of its three sections addresses a kind of compositional technique – transposition, tutti (a 2-part homophonic section) and developing tutti (parts of the band enter to build to a 2-part homophonic tutti). Less experienced players might enjoy the challenges of easy syncopation and musical lines constructed with larger intervals.” –Tom Duffy, Series Editor

Throughout the past year, Michael Gandolfi has been in residence with the band under the direction of Laura Bouix at Roland Hayes School of Music in Roxbury, MA. The students had a rich experience working with Gandolfi, and the collaboration gave students a chance to interact and create with a living composer. The Roland Hayes Band will perform the world premiere of Steps Ahead on Thursday, December 14th at 7pm at 55 Malcolm X Blvd, building 6, Roxbury, MA.

About BandQuest and American Composers Forum
BandQuest® is a series written especially for middle-level bands by world-class composers. The series is commissioned and published by the American Composers Forum (St. Paul, MN), an organization that has supported the creative spirit of today’s composers since 1975 by linking communities with composers and performers, encouraging the making, playing, and enjoyment of new music. All pieces are published by ACF and distributed exclusively by the Hal Leonard Corporation, the world’s largest music retailer. This project is supported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts.
