This winter, BandQuest series editor and composer Thomas C. Duffy met with the 7-8th grade band and director Daniel Kinsman at Fair Haven Middle School in Connecticut to jump-start the creation of a brand-new work for the students. The piece is called Scalin’ and Wailin,’ and it’s unlike anything else the ensemble has ever performed. This new piece employs differentiated learning where musicians and students can play this piece no matter what stage of technical facility they occupy. Divided into color groupings, beginners can play one color family right alongside more advanced musicians playing a different color family. And, the advanced partnering ensemble for the world premiere will be none other than the Yale Concert Band conducted by Duffy.

The side-by-side world premiere of Scalin’ and Wailin’ will take place on Friday, April 13th at Woolsey Hall (500 College St, New Haven CT) at 7:00pm. More details for the concert can be found here.
