Application Deadline: April 15th, 2025
Ensemble Ipse invites up to 50 composers to participate in a “Flash Mass” Siteworks event on Saturday 5/17/25 at 2pm (rain dates: Sunday 5/18/25 at 2pm, or Saturday 5/24/25 at 2pm), in Central Park’s Great Lawn, NYC. Each particpant will compose an electronic track to be played on their mobile phone, (similaneously, with the other 49 participants) with a provided Bluetooth speaker. Qualified applications will be accepted first come, first served.
Participants will receive a $75 honorarium for participating in the following:
-1 hour zoom meeting on Thursday 5/1/25 at 8pm EST, where guidance and resources will be shared about participating in the project. Participants will be randomly assigned one of five “sections”, based on timbre and texture, which can provide structure for their compositions.
-Participants will compose an electronic music track, which can be of any length, up to 60 minutes, and which focuses on their assigned section. If the track is shorter than 60 minutes, it can be looped during the event (the track can be as short at 60 seconds, and looped 60 times!). The track must be downloaded to the participant’s mobile phone and be available for playback without cellular service or WIFI.
-Participants may use any electronic music tools available for composition, but no copyrighted material may be used. A suggested free app is https://www.beepbox.co/.
-Participants will come to Central Park’s Great Lawn by 1pm on Saturday 5/17/25 with their mobile phone (see rain date options; participants must be able to commit to all three days to participate). Participants will be given a charged Bluetooth speaker to connect to their mobile phone, and be spatially grouped by “section”.
-The event will start promptly at 2pm. Participants are expected to hold their Bluetooth speakers for the 60 minute event to project the sound, and walk in spatial patterns at appointed times.
-Participants will be given their $75 cash honorarium at the event. No electronic payments will be made. Travel will be at the participants’ expense. If weather is inclement, two rain date backups are Sunday 5/18/25 at 2pm, or Saturday 5/24/25 at 2pm (participants will again arrive by 1pm). Participants must be able to commit to all three days to participate.
