Film 1: Shining Night: A Portrait of Composer Morten Lauridsen, offers a glimpse into the life and music of the artist considered to be one of the greatest living choral composers, now a San Juan Island resident.
Film 3: Beyond the Fear of Singing In. After a lifetime of hiding one’s singing voice, the passage of ‘coming out of the cave’ is a personal journey often requiring profound courage and self-acceptance. Filmed in North America, Europe, Australia and India, this is the third feature from ‘In Search of the Great Song’, the award-winning documentary series exploring and celebrating the music that lives in all of us.
These films feature music by world-renowned composers Morten Lauridsen and Alex Shapiro (a BandQuest composer), both residents of San Juan Island. Lauridsen is a recipient of the National Medal of Arts and was named an ‘American Choral Master’ by the National Endowment for the Arts. Shapiro’s music is known for her seamless melding of live and recorded sounds that often include striking visual and physical elements, and for her innovative uses of technology in her works.
